All That Heaven Allows + Far From Heaven12A

Douglas Sirk’s 1950s melodrama of forbidden love meets Todd Haynes’ luminous homage, which reimagines its themes through the lens of race, sexuality, and repression. Together, these films reveal the aching beauty and offer a biting critique of American suburbia across eras. Double-feature screening plus film quiz hosted by Keepin’ It Reel.

6.15pm – All That Heaven Allows (U)
Directed by Douglas Sirk. USA, 1955. 1h 29m.
In the stifling suburbia of 1950s America, a middle-class widow falls in love with her younger, free-spirited gardener. Their romance forces her to confront a painful choice: yield to the judgment of her neighbours and adult children, or risk everything to follow her heart. Filmed in sumptuous Technicolor, Douglas Sirk’s deeply moving portrait of love, class, and conformity in small-town America stands as the crowning achievement of Hollywood melodrama.

9pm – Far From Heaven (12A)
Directed by Todd Haynes. USA, 2002. 1h 47m.
In 1950s Connecticut, Cathy and Frank Whitetaker seem to embody the perfect suburban family. But beneath the picture-perfect exterior, their marriage is in crisis, and the world beyond their home is fraught with racial tensions. When Cathy must choose between living a lie or following her heart, her decision ignites gossip and alters the course of her life forever. A loving homage to Douglas Sirk’s socially conscious melodramas, Todd Haynes’ exquisitely crafted film is bold, visually stunning, and unflinchingly candid, speaking aloud what 1950s cinema could only hint at.
