Shabu12A

Directed by Shamira Raphaëla | Netherlands | 2022 | 1h 16m | Dutch w/ English subtitles

After a joyride gone awry, 14-year-old Shabu is compelled to spend the summer raising money to repair his grandmother’s car and rebuilding family bonds. As he pursues this goal, Shabu also follows his true passion: making music. Set in Rotterdam’s vibrant De Peperklip neighbourhood, this uplifting and humorous documentary captures Shabu’s infectious charm, as well as the diverse and tightly-knit community that surrounds him.

Reviews

‘The overall effect is magical and euphoric, rather as if Jacques Demy had jazzed up La Haine.’
★★★★
