Seven Samurai

Dir. Akira Kurosawa. Japan 1957. 3h 26m. Japanese/English subs. Starring Toshirô Mifune, Takashi Shimura, Daisuke Katô, Seiji Miyaguchi, Minoru Chiaki.

One of the most thrilling movie epics of all time, Seven Samurai tells the story of a group of 16th-century farmers, whose village is repeatedly attacked by bandits, asking an elderly rōnin (masterless samurai) for help. He hesitantly agrees and swiftly assembles a motley troupe of warriors to defend and train the villagers.

Strongly influences by the Westerns of John Ford, Kurosawa expertly sustains the suspense over a lengthy duration thanks to an engrossing story, richly drawn characters, and stunning action sequences. Genuinely epic in scale and tone, Seven Samurai has since become a touchstone for Westerns and Hollywood action movies ever since.
