Late Spring

Dir. Yasujirō Ozu. Japan, 1949. 1h 48m. Japanese/English subs. Starring Setsuko Hara, Chishû Ryû, Haruko Sugimura, Jun Usami, Kuniko Miyake.

A widowed professor lives with his doting and dutiful daughter, Noriko. He worries that she will never move out and get married, so pretends that he is himself considering a new marriage in order to prompt her to find a suitor. The first instalment of the “Noriko Trilogy”, this poignant tale of love and loss in postwar Japan remains one of the most poignant of Yasujiro Ozu’s family portraits.
