#SaveTheUPP – Messages of Support

In the lead-up to the campaign, we gathered quotes and photos from some local supporters and to use on our social media throughout the three-week campaign. We didn’t think we’d hit our target in 90mins! It would be a shame to let them go to waste, so we thought that we’d share them with you on here...

“I don’t know if I would be working in film without the UPP - it’s where I fell in love with film. A true independent cinema, one of the very best!” Catherine Bray, BBC Inside Cinema Executive

“The Ultimate Picture Palace is your gateway to the Universe; I love dropping in for whatever’s on, and I know from the Q&A’s I’ve done there’s no more curious and interesting audience in Oxford. Cowley Road without the UPP would be like Kirk without Spock - and I hope we can all club together and keep it safe.” Chris Lintott, Professor of Astrophysics in the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford & Presenter for BBC The Sky at Night

“The pandemic has hit independent cinemas really hard and the UPP has not been spared of the effects. We really need to raise as much money as possible to keep the UPP here in the heart of East Oxford. Please chip in a few bob. We can’t afford to lose the UPP, it’s phenomenal.” Councillor Tom Hayes, City Councillor for St Clement's Ward in East Oxford

“After many months of lockdown living, many will be craving the social and cultural experience that cinema offers. Independent cinemas are particularly valued for providing this shared, big-screen experience, serving many different audiences with great stories from across the world. The Ultimate Picture Palace is Oxford’s independent cinema, a fixture in the city’s cultural scene, and in fact, one of the most established and best loved independent cinemas in the country. A cinema to be proud of. I would urge everyone to support the campaign in every possible way to ensure that the Ultimate Picture Palace is able to re-open its doors in the autumn.” David Sin, Independent Cinema Office

“The UPP is an iconic Oxford indie, and the only independent cinema in Oxford. Without unique spaces like this, we lose the heart and soul from our community, and our city would lack the character, charm and vibrancy that make it a great place to live and work.” Rosie Jacobs, Director, Independent Oxford

“For as long as I can remember the UPP has been an iconic and vital part of the cultural lifeblood of Oxford, a truly independent cinema at the heart of the East Oxford community and the thought of a Cowley Road without this institution is a deeply concerning one. This campaign, to raise funds to see the cinema through the tough times it's facing, is a real opportunity for the cinema-loving community, or even those who care about keeping Cowley Road unique, to make a statement about how much they love the UPP and ensure the survival of a true East Oxford landmark.” Carl Smithson, Manager, Truck Store

“The UPP is a one of a kind cinema where the community comes together to share their love of film. To lose the UPP would leave a hole in the cultural heart of Oxford, we would be very sad to see it go.” Joe Humphries, Designer, Bounce Design (suppliers of our staff and volunteers t-shirts)
