Dir. Harold Young. UK, 1934. 1h 34m. Starring Leslie Howard, Merle Oberon, Raymond Massey, Nigel Bruce, Bramwell Fletcher, Walter Rilla.

"They seek him here, they seek him there, Those Frenchies seek him everywhere. Is he in heaven? Or is he in hell? That damned elusive Pimpernel!"

This classic British adventure follows the escapades of an 18th-century English aristocrat who leads a double life, rescuing French nobles from Robespierre's Reign of Terror.

This film is being shown in conjunction with Modern Art Oxford's latest temporary exhibition Invisible Strategies and has been chosen by the artist Lubaina Himid. Tickets for this film are available at a special reduced price of £6 for adults and £5 concessions. UPP and MAO members will receive an additional £2 discount on the listed prices.

'Leslie Howard’s performance in the title role is not only up to the Howard standard, but so fine that an extraordinary production job was required to prevent this from being a monolog film.' Variety
