The Philadelphia Story Rated U

The Philadelphia Story

Dir. George Cukor. USA, 1940. 1h 50m. Starring Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart

A special screening of The Philadelphia Story in memory of The Ultimate Picture Palace owner Becky Hallsmith, who passed away in September this year.

Katharine Hepburn stars as the spoiled socialite Tracy Lord in this sparkling 1940 screen adaptation, one of the great romantic comedies from the golden age of MGM studios and one of Becky’s very favourite films. A dedication to Becky and a live musical performance by Oxford ukulele group The Rebukes, who performed several times at the cinema during her time as owner, precedes this screening.

We will donate all ticket sales to charity Lymphoma Action, who will also say a few words before the film begins.

‘Still a sparkling delight.’ David Jenkins, Little White Lies

‘Utterly beguiling, funny and romantic’ Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
