The Lighthouse Rated 15

The Lighthouse

Dir. Robert Eggers. Canada/USA, 2019. 1h 49m. Starring Willem Dafoe, Robert Pattinson, Valeriia Karaman.

A pair of grizzled lighthouse keepers try to keep a hold of their sanity while living on an isolated and mysterious island in 1890s New England. An absurdist black comedy that lurches brilliantly between expressionist horror and probing psychodrama. Shot on black-and-white 35mm, Robert Egger’s followup to folk-horror sensation The Witch was nominated for Best Cinematography at this year’s Oscars.

‘This contrast between the blunt and the ambiguous is the fuel that keeps The Lighthouse burning. It moves the story forward while also making for a raucous and consistently surprising story.’ ★★★★★ Elena Lazic, Little White Lies

‘Very few films can make you scared and excited at the same time. Just like the lighthouse beam, this is dazzling and dangerous.’ ★★★★★ Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
