The Great Dictator Rated PG

The Great Dictator

Dir. Charles Chaplin. USA, 1940. 2h 5m. Starring Charles Chaplin, Jack Oakie, Reginald Gardiner, Henry Daniell, Billy Gilbert, Grace Hayle, Carter De Haven.

Chaplin, in his first pure talkie, plays a comically paranoid and ruthless dictator called Adenoid Hynkel and a persecuted Jewish barber who bears a striking resemblance to Hynkel. The film was Chaplin’s most commercially successful film and has gone down in history as one of Hollywood’s greatest ever comedies.

Tickets for these screenings are available at specially reduced prices. Part of the Woven Histories Classics Season, curated by Modern Art Oxford to complement their latest exhibition.

'In a climate of US isolationism, Chaplin' savagely funny film painted Hitler as someone to be mocked. It's a film that, particularly in its legendary closing speech, bares its teeth not only to smile but to bite.’ Phelim O’Neill, The Guardian
