The Gospel According to St Matthew Rated PG

The Gospel According to St Matthew

Dir. Pier Paolo Pasolini. Italy, 1967. 2h 17m. Italian/subs. Starring Enrique Irazoqui, Margherita Caruso, Susanna Pasolini, Marcello Morante, Mario Socrate, Settimio Di Porto, Alfonso Gatto, Luigi Barbini.

Biblical drama following the life of Jesus Christ as depicted in the Gospel of Matthew. Pasolini’s raw film-making favours neo-realism over religious fanfare and uses a political language which speaks to his passionate Marxist beliefs. Nominated for three Oscars in 1967 and winner of the Special Jury Prize at 1964's Venice Film Festival.

‘Pasolini's brilliant Passion play presents the Messiah as emerging from the landscape, and out of Marxist ideology. A fierce magnesium flame of a movie.’ ★★★★★ Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

‘Pasolini's is one of the most effective films on a religious theme I have ever seen, perhaps because it was made by a nonbeliever who did not preach, glorify, underline, sentimentalize or romanticize his famous story, but tried his best to simply record it.’ ★★★★★ Roger Ebert, rogerebert.com
