The Blue Angel Rated PG

The Blue Angel

Dir. Josef Von Sternberg. Germany, 1930. 1h 45m. German/subs. Starring Emil Jannings, Marlene Dietrich, Kurt Gerron, Rosa Valetti, Hans Albers, Reinhold Bernt, Eduard Von Winterstein, Hans Roth.

Marlene Dietrich shines in one of the first enduringly great movies of cinema's early sound era. Great German character actor Emil Jannings gives an exquisitely detailed performance as the pompous, middle-aged Professor Rath, a high-school teacher whose life is destroyed through his romantic infatuation with Lola Lola (Dietrich), a willful young singer he meets at the eponymous nightclub. Superbly designed and lit, this is a modern tragedy and an erotic masterpiece featuring fine songs by Friedrich Holländer (among them Dietrich's signature number, Falling in Love Again).

'If The Blue Angel is familiar material, it is also the sort of thing that Jannings does better than anyone else.' Time Magazine

'The film looks and sounds its age, but remains enthralling.' Time Out
