Directed by Wim Wenders | Germany | 1984 | 2h 30m | Starring Harry Dean Stanton, Nastassja Kinski, Dean Stockwell, Aurore Clément

A disheveled man wanders out of the desert not knowing who he is. When his brother finds him, he helps him remember the life he led before he disappeared four years ago. Director Wim Wenders and Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Sam Shepard create an exquisite exploration on the myth of the American family set to Ry Cooder’s haunting Americana score. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival.

Reviews

‘I’ve seldom seen such a potent combination of superior talents. Watch the first hour of the movie, and what you will see is an unparalleled summation of America as seen by wondering European eyes.’
Derek Malcolm, The Guardian
