Monos Rated 15

Dir. Alejandro Landes. Colombia, 2019. 1h 42m. Spanish/subs. Starring Sofia Buenaventura, Julian Giraldo, Karen Quintero, Laura Castrillón, Deibi Rueda, Paul Cubides.

On a remote mountaintop in South America, a team of wild teenage bandits are tasked with guarding an American hostage. Days of ritualistic military exercises and feral indulgence are interrupted by a sudden attack which causes the group to disperse into the jungle. Scattered and disorientated in the depths of the wilderness, cracks in the unit begin to form. A hypnotic thriller bolstered by rapturous cinematography and a haunting soundtrack written by Mica Levi (Under the Skin, Jackie).

‘Tonally, the film is mercurial, capturing the multiple realities of its young subjects who are both children and soldiers – the distressing, disorienting dichotomy at the centre of its eerie spell.’ ★★★★★ Mark Kermode, The Guardian

‘Monos isn’t a social-issue tract, or just a lament for the beasts of no nation. It’s a fever dream of a war drama, caught halfway between realism and the hallucinatory intensity of an ancient fairy tale.’ ★★★★★ AA Dowd, The AV Club
