Mayor Rated 12A

Dir. David Osit. UK/USA, 2020. 1h 29m.

David Osit’s richly detailed documentary follows Musa Hadid, the charismatic Christian mayor of Ramallah, the de facto capital of Palestine. Hadid seeks to improve the day-to-day lives of his constituents while navigating the political turmoil of running a city surrounded on all sides by Israeli settlements. Rich with detailed observation and a surprising amount of humour, this engrossing documentary poses the question: how do you run a city when you don’t have a country?

These screenings will be introduced by members of the Oxford/Ramallah Friendship Association and followed by a screening of Akram Salhab’s short film Can We Speak About Palestine.

‘Mayor offers a striking new perspective on that struggle, with a personal on-the-ground quality matched by grand tonal ambitions that makes it the best of its subgenre.’ ★★★★★ Eric Kohn, IndieWire

‘Deft editing and unexpectedly affecting music choices make for an engaging portrait of the kind of impassioned and dedicated politician who seems in short supply right now.’ ★★★★ Wendy Ide, The Observer
