Honeyland Rated 12A

Honeyland

Dir. Tamara Kotevska, Ljubomir Stefanov. Republic of North Macedonia, 2019. 1h 30m. Turkish/subs. Starring Hatidze Muratova, Nazife Muratova, Hussein Sam, Ljutvie Sam.

In a deserted Macedonian village, a 50-something woman ekes out a living as the last in a long line of Macedonian wild beekeepers. However, her peaceful existence is thrown into upheaval by the arrival of an itinerant family who seizes the opportunity to make money on the wholesale production of honey. This beautifully shot, Sundance Award-winning documentary exposes the fundamental tension between nature and humanity, harmony and discord, exploitation and sustainability.

This one-off screening will be followed by a Science Oxford Q&A with ecology and conservation expert Robin McArthur, University of Reading.
