Gagarine Rated 12A

Dir. Fanny Liatard, Jérémy Trouilh. France, 2020. 1h 38m. French/subs. Starring Alseni Bathily, Lyna Khoudri, Jamil McCraven, Finnegan Oldfield, Denis Lavant.

Teenager Youri has lived his whole life in the vast Gagarine housing estate, built in the 1960s on the outskirts of Paris and named after Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. Now in a state of disrepair, the building is set to be torn down, prompting Youri to fight against the authorities evacuation order in an attempt to save his home. An affectionate celebration of close-knit communities that combines down-to-earth social realism with a dreamy sci-fi-infused visual flair.

‘Free of cliché, visually ingenious, Gagarine is a pleasure - pure magic realism, a homespun spectacular.’ ★★★★★ Danny Leigh, The FT

‘Youri’s earthbound journey to the stars offers a stirring escape from an unjust reality. Like his Russian sorta-namesake, he’s a hero we can all get behind.’ ★★★★ Philip De Semlyen, Time Out
