Citizen Jane: Battle for the City

Dir. Matt Tyrnauer. USA, 2016. 1h 33m. Starring Jane Jacobs, Robert Moses, Thomas Campanella, Mindy Fullilove, Alexander Garvin, Paul Goldberger, Steven Johnson, Max Page.

Thought-provoking documentary about radical activist Jane Jacobs who fought to stop despotic city planner Robert Moses from running roughshod over New York City in the 1960s. The film retraces the battles for the city as urbanisation moves to the front of the global agenda and examines the city of today though the lens of one of its greatest champions.

This screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Dr Sue Brownill, Reader in Urban Policy and Governance, Oxford Brookes University; Dr Annie Skinner, author of 'Cowley Road: a History'; and Dr Igea Troiani, Senior Lecturer in Architecture, Oxford Brookes University.

"A beautifully organized documentary (befitting its subject, urban planning), Matt Tyrnauer’s elegant profile sets up its iconic NYC showdown along geometric lines." ★★★★ Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out

"As the world's urban population grows by more than one million every week, so does the resonance of this documentary." ★★★★ Kate Muir, The Times
