Apples Rated 12A

Dir. Christos Nikou. Greece, 2020. 1h 31m. Greek/subs. Starring Aris Servetalis, Sofia Georgovassili, Anna Kalaitzidou, Argyris Bakirtzis

When an unexplained illness causes people to develop sudden amnesia, a man finds himself enrolled in a recovery program designed to help him build a new life. His treatment involves performing daily tasks and capturing these new memories with a Polaroid camera. Christos Nikou’s quirky debut follows in the deadpan comedy footsteps of fellow countryman Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Favourite).

‘Nikou previously worked as an assistant director on Yorgos Lanthimos’s Dogtooth and he clearly came away infected. Apples has the same deadpan sensibility and a similar line in mordant black comedy.’ ★★★★ Xan Brooks, The Guardian

‘This hugely accomplished, satisfyingly textured first feature is really something special.’ Wendy Ide, Screen International
